Belgium ranks as fourth most attractive country in the world for foreign investors

According to a recent report by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development), foreign direct investment in Belgium rose by more than 50% from 2009 to almost $62 billion (about EUR 43 billion) in 2010.

  • University of Hasselt replaces lower jaw with 3D-printed replica

    The University of Hasselt announced news last month of the first successful lower jaw transplant to utilise 3D printing technology. The infected lower jaw of an 83 year-old woman was surgically replaced with a titanium replica. The research group at the University of Hasselt Biomed research institute developed this new procedure in collaboration with XIOS College, the KU Leuven, the Mouth, Jaw and Face surgeons at Orbis Medical Centre in Sittard-Geleen (Netherlands), Xilloc Medical BV (Maastricht, Netherlands) and LayerWise NV.

  • Westvleteren 12 rated world’s best beer

    According to ratebeer.com, Westvleteren 12 is this year’s best beer in the world. The website presents the awards every year, and makes up one of the largest beer competitions in the world. Westvleteren 12 beat out 140,000 other beers from as many as 12,000 brewers all over the world to take first place.

  • Two Belgians accept award in Turkey

    Two Belgians were awarded with the TÜTAP (Tourism and Promotion Platform) Award on 17 February. The awards are given out every year to people in recognition of their efforts to promote Turkey and to contribute to its image abroad. Winners this year include Senator Fatma Pehlivan and honorary teacher Emiel Hoorne.

  • Baxter is investing in Belgium

    Pharmaceutical company Baxter is investing EUR 50 million in its production site in Lessines. This money will be used to build a new unit of 4,500 m² and create approximately 50 extra jobs. As of 2014, a new medicine named Glassia will be produced for the American market.

  • Belgian researchers develop new vaccine to combat HIV

    Scientists at the Institute for Tropical Medicine, the University of Antwerp and Antwerp University Hospital have successfully developed a new vaccine to combat the HIV virus. The vaccine was tested on volunteers.

  • Wood in Oud-Turnhout awarded European prize

    The European Commission has awarded a prize to De Liereman wood at Oud-Turnhout for the LIFE-Lierman nature conservation project. Natuurpunt, which managed the project running from 2004 to 2010, received the Best Life Nature Project Award. This prize is awarded every year to nature conservation projects that set an example for Europe.

  • Belgian Bullhead (Rundskop) nominated for Oscar

    The film Bullhead was nominated for the Foreign-Language Academy Award. This is quite an achievement for the first full-feature film by Director Michaël R. Roskam (1972) from Sint-Truiden. The film is a crime drama about farmers and gangsters who get involved with the hormone mafia.
