date: 12 September 2012

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders strongly condemns the attack against the American consulate in Benghazi during which several Americans were killed, including the American ambassador to Libya.

He expresses his condolences to the people and government of the United States.

The Minister also wishes to express his sympathy to the families of the victims, and his thoughts go to the people who are wounded.

Minister Reynders welcomes the fact that the Libyan President has condemned this attack and that he is promising the Libyan government’s full support in bringing the perpetrators of this cowardly attack to justice. It is important that Lybia continue further along the path to democratisation, security and peace, the Minister adds.

Finally, Mister Reynders supports the call made by High Representative Catherine Ashton to the Libyan authorities to take the necessary measures without delay for the protection of diplomats and foreign workers in Libya.
