Transposition of EU directives

The transposition of EU Directives into Belgian legislation is the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Olivier Chastel, who is also in charge of preparing the Belgian Presidency of the EU.

He acts at Federal level, notably within the Council of Ministers, as well as at inter-federal level, e.g. as a member of the Coordination Committee.

Since 2002, meetings are held every two months between the European Coordinators ("Euro-coordinators") of the various Federal Departments and Federated Entities.

A database (Eurtransbel) is available to all Euro-coordinators, who can thus work as a network and follow the pathway of each European Directive as it is transposed into Belgian legislation.

All of these mechanisms have been developed to achieve the new European target of a maximum transposition deficit of 1%.

This target is politically important for Belgium, given that it will preside over the European Union in the second half of 2010.
