The European Union has set itself the objective of becoming the most competitive and dynamic knowledge society in the world. Education, vocational training and supporting for youngsters are becoming three key priority areas for the European Union.

Every year, several thousand EU citizens benefit from cross-border education or training programmes that foster intercultural understanding and offer them the chance to live, study, acquire specialist skills and work in other EU Member States.

The educational qualifications they obtain are recognised by the other EU Member States. Citizens’ access to training, whether in their own country or another EU Member State, is facilitated by partnerships, through exchange programmes and by eliminating a lot of red tape.

The European Union runs a vast range of educational and training programmes including:

  • The Socrates education programme, which includes Erasmus, the oldest and undoubtedly best known cross-border education programme financed by the Union. Every year, Erasmus awards scholarships to students and teaching staff, offering them a chance to switch to universities in other Member States to teach or take courses there.
  • The Leonardo da Vinci programme promotes international exchanges and cross-border projects for vocational training purposes.
