Losing and regaining Belgian citizenship

Subject to certain conditions, both adults and minors can lose Belgian citizenship. Two possibilities exist for adults: either no declaration stating their intention to retain Belgian citizenship (déclaration de conservation/behoudsverklaring) or they choose to renounce their Belgian citizenship. Minors may lose Belgian citizenship if a parent loses Belgian citizenship or if they are adopted by a foreigner.

People who have lost Belgian citizenship in the past can subject to certain conditions reacquire it. Only adults can apply to re-acquire Belgian citizenship. Submitting an application does not mean that you will automatically re-acquire Belgian citizenship.
