Minister Chastel meets President Jimmy Carter

On Tuesday, 4 October, Prime Minister Yves Leterme and the Minister for Development Cooperation Olivier Chastel convened at the Egmont Palace to welcome former US President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter. Carter wished to thank those responsible in Belgium for the financial assistance Belgium provided to the Carter Center, an NGO founded in 1982 that aims to consolidate emerging democracies and support health-related issues in these countries. Belgium is one of its main donor countries.

“The Democratic Republic of Congo is of prime importance for Belgium, and it is for this reason that, as in 2006, we have made a contribution of EUR 500,000 towards the elections in the DRC, in particular towards the training of electoral observers and a programme for deploying them,” declared Olivier Chastel.

President Carter also solicited Belgian support in sending observers to the next elections in Tunisia. “Belgium will happily accede to this request for USD 110,000,” declared the Minister for Cooperation.

After the work meeting, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown was presented to President Jimmy Carter in the presence of HRH Princess Astrid.
