Deputy Prime Minister and Minister  of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo has met today with Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia and current chairwoman of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). The next four years, Belgium will release 26 million euros for the GPE, a multilateral mechanism that focusses on access to primary and secondary education.

Transfer costs on the remittance of money to developing countries must be lower. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo said this in reaction to the 11.11.11 and HIVA research into Belgian money remittances to developing countries. The research shows that the average transfer price of remittances from  Belgium fluctuates at around 8%.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo today signed two programmes in Benin, related to the promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Belgium will be cooperating with UNICEF to help combat child marriages. With the support of our country, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will be setting up an information project aimed at young people and women, covering sexual education and sexual violence. Minister De Croo also announced that Belgium will release a total of 60 million euros over the next four years in support of UNICEF's work and another 36 million euros for UNFPA.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo this week brings a four-day working visit to Benin and Senegal. He will be accompanied by Goedele Liekens and Axelle Red, both active as Goodwill Ambassadors for the United Nations. The four-day visit fits in with the initiative 'She Decides', which focuses on the reinforcement of rights for girls and women, and in particular with regard to their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo announced plans to eliminate sleeping sickness by 2025 today in Geneva, where global health experts are meeting to discuss Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). If sleeping sickness is not addressed, over 50 million people are at risk of contracting the disease.

They also discussed the situation in Syria. Tomorrow, the European Commission will organise in Brussels the international conference "Supporting the future of Syria and the region”.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo met with some humanitarian NGOs today. Besides the members of the consortium Famine 12-12, representatives of the Red Cross also took part in the meeting. They discussed the approach of the humanitarian crisis currently touching Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria and South Sudan, four countries threatened by famine. Minister De Croo promised to mobilize as soon as possible the first part of a humanitarian aid package which was promised in the context of the doubling of the donations given to Famine 12-12. Humanitarian organizations also urged Minister De Croo to sensitize UN Secretary-General Guterres to the safety of humanitarian workers and to humanitarian access to disaster areas.

Minister De Croo has also planned international demarches. He will look, together with the United Nations, into a way to better tackle the structural causes. “We cannot look away when children are dying of hunger”.
