On Friday 6 September 2019, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation organized a high level seminar on the Opinion 1-17 of the European Court of Justice and the reform of investment protection in the Egmont Palace in Brussels.
The objective of this event was to bring together key stakeholders to reflect on the reform of the existing Investor State Dispute Settlement mechanisms, on the implications of the ECJ Opinion 1-17 on the Investment Court System, and on the future Multilateral Investment Court.
After an introductory speech, the event started out with an in-depth presentation and analysis of the Opinion 1-17 by the President of the European Court of Justice, Koen Lenaerts. This high level presentation was followed by two panel discussions that brought together civil society and academia, as well as business representatives and legal practitioners. Finally, the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders, made some concluding remarks.
