Legalisation by the competent Belgian authority

In some cases, your document must be legalised by the competent Belgian authority before the FPS Foreign Affairs can affix the legalisation/apostille required for use abroad. Please check on our website if such is the case before coming to our offices so as to avoid any unnecessary delay.

A Belgian municipality

Must be signed by the mayor, by an alderman or by a delegated civil servant art.44/1 whose signature has been deposited through our online platform
A sworn translator go to the website of the FPS Justice, available in Dutch or in French, for more information
A medical doctor Must be legalised by the FPS Public Health
A Dutch-language educational institution Must be legalised by the Education Department of the Ministry of the Flemish Community
A French-language educational institution, higher education/university level Must be legalised by the Ministry of the French Community
A French-language educational institution, primary or secondary level, organised by the French Community (e.g. Athénée Royal)  Must be legalised by the Ministry of the French Community
A subsidised French-language educational institution, primary or secondary level (e.g. école libre, communale, provinciale) Must be legalised by the mayor or by an alderman of the municipality where the school is located
