Didier Reynders congratulates Michel Aoun with his election as President of the Lebanese Republic
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders congratulates Michel Aoun with his election by the Lebanese Parliament as President of the Lebanese Republic. With this election, there is again a president in Lebanon, after a period of two years. The election is crucial for the future of Lebanon, a country that is confronted with important challenges, as the civil war in Syria and the hosting of more than a million Syrian refugees on its soil.
Belgium, as the EU, hopes that Lebanon will continue on this path, and that the important step of this presidential election will be followed by the formation of a government and by parliamentary elections. Our country calls on the Lebanese stakeholders to ensure with all means that parliamentary elections will take place, in 2017, in the best possible conditions. Belgium also hopes that the election of the President will allow for a constructive dialogue between all Lebanese parties, to find a solution for the current internal - in particular economic - difficulties that the country is confronted with.
As the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, Didier Reynders also thanks Prime Minister Tammam Salam and parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who assured the continuity of the Lebanese state. Belgium also congratulates the Lebanese Armed Forces. With their courageous fight against terrorist groups, in particular in the border region with Syria, they make a crucial contribution to stability in Lebanon. Belgium will continue to support Lebanon in this fight and therefore recently made an important gift to the Lebanese Armed Forces.
