25th anniversary of relations between Belgium and Uzbekistan on 10 March
On 10 March, Belgium celebrates the 25th anniversary of its relations with Uzbekistan. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders welcomes this celebration, which crowns a bilateral relationship that has diversified over the years. He is also keen to pay tribute to the friendship between our two peoples and wishes the Uzbek people great harmony and prosperity.
Since Uzbekistan's independence, our bilateral relationship has been enhanced by high-level political contacts including regular meetings between the Belgian and Uzbek Ministers for Foreign Affairs, political consultations in Brussels and Tashkent in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2016 and the parliamentary diplomacy demonstrated in 2015 by the President of the Belgian Chamber's visit to Uzbekistan.
Economic exchanges between our two countries have increased over time and still hold enormous potential. Since 1992, a number of missions by Belgian regional bodies have helped to make the commercial strengths of both partners better known, particularly in the chemical and organic fields. The next AWEX/FIT joint trade mission to Uzbekistan will take place in March 2017, which demonstrates the interest our businesses have in this market. The recent reforms announced as part of the fight against corruption and the liberalisation of the exchange rate system are encouraging signs for our investors.
Belgium therefore welcomes this anniversary and is ready to strengthen its relations with Uzbekistan, while respecting values such as the rule of law, the free market and multilateral cooperation on the issues of peace and security.
