Didier Reynders condemns the acceleration of settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders condemns, like the European Union, the announcements of last week by the Israeli authorities on the construction of thousands of extra settlement units.
In the last months, the Israeli authorities took several measures to accelerate settlement expansion in the occupied territories. A law was adopted regularizing settlements that are illegal even under Israeli law and a whole new settlement was established in the West Bank.
Belgium underlines that Israel's settlement policy in the occupied territories, including in East Jerusalem, constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, as was repeated in UN Security Council Resolution 2334. These new announcements risk to seriously compromise a resuming of meaningful peace talks between the two parties to reach a two state solution and the achievement of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.
Belgium, just as the European Union, will not recognize any changes to the 1967 borders, other than those that would be agreed upon by both parties.
