Didier Reynders on consular assistance following hurricane Irma
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders is following very closely the situation in the Carribean due to hurricane Irma. Through our embassies and consulates our fellow citizens have received advice and instructions. Belgians travelling through the region can contact at any time our diplomatic missions via the emergency numbers. It is still recommended to strictly adhere to the instructions of the local authorities.
Belgium is permanently in touch with France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The territories of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy have been the worst hit till now. Consular services of these three contries have also activated their proper emergency numbers. These countries will be in charge of bringing people to safer areas nearby. In these cases, Foreign Affairs will inform the fellow citizens concerned to inform them. Our team on duty has already been able to reassure some families worried about the fate of their loved ones.
Our Consulate General in Atlanta has been informing and assisting our fellow citizens in the region of Florida. They also can be followed on twitter for updates on the situation: @BelgiumAtlanta.
