Didier Reynders takes note of the appointment of Bruno Tshibala as Prime Minister of the DRC

On Friday, 7 April, Bruno Tshibala has been appointed by President Kabila to serve as Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders takes note of this appointment which deviates from the letter and spirit of the New Year's Eve agreement that foresaw the appointment of a Prime Minister proposed by the ‘Rassemblement'. Like the European Union, Belgium is preoccupied by the fact that the transition authorities cannot count on the necessary broad support.
Echoing United Nations Resolution 2348 (2017) and the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union of 6 March, the minister reiterates the need to fully implement the New Year's Eve Agreement. This also includes the lifting of restrictions on rights and freedoms.
In this context, and following the sharp deterioration of the security and human rights situation in different parts of the country, Belgium will consult with its international partners about relations with the DRC. Belgium calls on all actors to do everything in their power to allow the expression of opinions in a peaceful manner.
