Minister Reynders calls for concrete measures in favor of Rohingyas in Myanmar

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders continues to follow the situation in Myanmar with great attention. He has taken note of Aung San Suu Kyi’s speech yesterday, in which she expressed regret over the suffering caused by the current conflict in Rakhine State. She has also committed to ensure the return of Rohingya refugees and condemned Human Rights violations.

The Belgian Foreign Minister would like this important speech to result very quickly in concrete measures. The first urgency is for tensions in Rakhine State to abate and to allow unlimited access for humanitarian aid. But it is also important to be able to take long-term measures in order to guarantee decent living conditions to the Rohingya population within the framework of the Burmese nation. Only these will make peaceful coexistence among different ethnicities in this State of Myanmar possible.

It is in this sense that Belgium intervened yesterday in the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, during an interactive dialogue with the Fact-Finding Commission on Rakhine State. And this is also what was repeated to the Ambassador of Myanmar to Belgium at a meeting at the FPS Foreign Affairs.

Didier Reynders will continue to express his great worry over the Rohingya’s situation in his future bilateral contacts with the Burmese authorities.
