Didier Reynders meets his Chinese counterpart WANG Yi

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders met his Chinese counterpart WANG Yi on Friday for a constructive and open exchange on Belgian-Chinese bilateral relations and international issues as North-Korea, Iran and trade policy. 

On the bilateral level, both ministers welcomed the strong existing ties in the fields of investment, trade and transport. Several new international air connections between Belgium and China were launched during the last few months as well as train cargo connections from Antwerp and Zeebrugge. 

On international issues, Minister Reynders is looking forward to working together with China in the UN Security Council for the period 2019-2020. Several fields of cooperation were identified. Human rights were discussed as well, a topic Belgium attaches great importance to and where we are pleading for an open dialogue. It was agreed that Belgium and China would take a common initiative on the rights of children in Geneva. Minister Reynders invited Minister WANG to the International Conference on the abolition of the death penalty in Brussels in 2019. Minister WANG reiterated his invitation to Minister Reynders for a visit to Beijing.
