Belgium pays close attention to Amaya Coppens in Nicaragua

The embassy of Belgium in Panama City has officially contacted the authorities of Nicaragua to enquire into the arrest, in the suburbs of Managua, of Amaya Coppens on November 15. Our embassy will endeavour to help her through privileged diplomatic channels on the ground.

Amaya Coppens’ lawyer could get in touch with the judiciary authorities. Amaya has been questioned regarding a file deemed of national interest. She is being detained at the Auxilio Judicial Nacional, a pre-trial detention center of the police, for a duration which should not exceed 48h.

Belgium attaches paramount importance to the rule of law, fundamental rights and civil society in Nicaragua and, in this regard, refers to the conclusions of the Council of the European Union of October 14, 2019.
