The main global challenges such as the fight against climate change, the fight against terrorism and the approach to migration, which increasingly have come into focus in recent years, will keep on dominating considerably the external policy of the European Union in the near future. Moreover, addressing these issues should be placed against the background of the referendum in the UK, the new President of the US taking office and an increasingly assertive action of a number of other global players including China and Russia. To the European Union these issues are not only major challenges; they offer also opportunities to further develop a solid, coordinated and fully-fledged common external policy. The Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy launched in 2016 offers a possibility to work on this and to obtain a coordinated policy supported by different policy dimensions such as external policy, foreign trade, defence and development cooperation, using various policy instruments.
