Education and training
Education and training is one of the five sectors targeted by Belgian Development Cooperation, in line with the law on international cooperation of May 1999. In 2002, a sectoral strategy paper on this topic was drawn up. Over the past decade, between 10 and 12% of DGD expenditure was devoted to the education sector. During this time, Belgium’s commitment to the sector was updated with the signature of the Millennium Development Goals, two of which concern education, and the introduction of new forms of aid, such as sectoral budget support for the ministries of education in a number of partner countries.
In 2006, Belgian Development Cooperation’s efforts in the education sector were thoroughly re-evaluated. The strategy was temporarily amended based on the outcome of that re-evaluation.
